Because, frankly, who the hell am I? I'm just one person. Of course I'd rather love it and be all gushy about it. There's a difference in my mind between loving a friend's work and idolizing an author, and that was the trap I didn't want to fall into.Kelly Swailshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08712523963592799928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16769486.post-5420936082865856332008-01-22T12:35:00.000-06:002008-01-22T12:35:00.000-06:00I must say, that as a writer, the reaction I hope ...I must say, that as a writer, the reaction I hope to get from my friends who read my work is, "Holy crap, you wrote that? I didn't know you had it in you! That's awesome!"

It would not change my feelings about them as friends at all.

I, too, have a hard time reading friends' work, but I think it has a lot more to do with my fear that I won't like it. How do you not gush to your friend about their writing? But how do you lie to a friend about something so important?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16769486.post-12429369458257770892008-01-21T16:07:00.000-06:002008-01-21T16:07:00.000-06:00Thanks, Sean! Thanks, Sean!Kelly Swailshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08712523963592799928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16769486.post-80134565123555531122008-01-21T09:42:00.000-06:002008-01-21T09:42:00.000-06:00Awesome post, X. I'm getting to where I enjoy reading again. Hopefully soon I'll be able to seperate the friend from the author better.Kelly Swailshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08712523963592799928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16769486.post-90274413272598501532008-01-18T09:38:00.000-06:002008-01-18T09:38:00.000-06:00That's actually kind of the way I felt about Steve...That's actually kind of the way I felt about Steve Brust for a number of years. We weren't close friends, but we'd done a couple of Ren Fest type shows together and I didn't want the theater guy I'd had a couple of drinks with to turn into an AUTHOR for me. Then I read them and got over it. I love some of Steve's stuff and don't love some of it, and it really had no effect on the other stuff at all. After you've been doing this for a while you get used to divorcing how you feel about the work from how you feel about the writer. It's a strange old process.Kelly McCulloughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06399122960869198042noreply@blogger.com
